Also called ethynylbenzene. Of all aromatic hydrocarbons, it is the simplest compound with an acetylene bond. It is obtained by dehydrobrominating β-bromostyrene with potassium hydroxide. It is a colorless liquid with a melting point of -44.8°C and a boiling point of 141.7°C. It is insoluble in water. It dissolves well in various organic solvents. When treated with ammoniacal copper salt and silver salt solutions, it produces a precipitate of explosive metal compounds, just as in the case of acetylene.
