This region lies in the southeast of the South Island of New Zealand, on the southeastern slopes of the Southern Alps and south of the Canterbury Plains. It is an important hydroelectric power generation area, and is the second largest agricultural and livestock region in the South Island after the Canterbury Plains, known for sheep farming and fruit cultivation. The capital city is Dunedin. Historically, this region, together with the Southland region to the west, was once called Otago Province (state system abolished in 1876), and is particularly famous for the gold rush of the 1860s. Area: 36,441 ^km2 . Population: 185,225 (1991).
