Jinzaburou Masaki

Japanese: 真崎甚三郎 - まざきじんざぶろう
Jinzaburou Masaki

Army officer. Born in Saga Prefecture. 9th class of the Army Academy. Classmate of Araki Sadao, Abe Nobuyuki, and Honjo Shigeru. After graduating from the Army War College, he became a section member of the Military Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of the Army, working mainly in the fields of military orders and education. In 1926 (Taisho 15), he became the headmaster of the Army Academy, and attracted students by placing emphasis on spiritual education. He formed an anti-Ugaki faction with Araki and others, and later became a central figure in the group known as the Imperial Way faction. In 1934 (Showa 9), he became Superintendent General of Education and promoted the Movement for Clarifying the National Polity, but came into conflict with the newly emerging Control faction and was dismissed by Army Minister Hayashi. He was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting rebellion during the February 26 Incident, but was ultimately found not guilty. After Japan lost the war, he was held in Sugamo Prison as a suspected Class A war criminal, but was removed from the indictment in the final stage of defendant selection. His "Masaki Jinzaburo Diary" (Yamakawa Publishing) has been published.
