American politician and international law scholar. He served as legal adviser to the Bering Sea Arbitration in 1892-93 and as an adviser to the U.S. government on a number of international issues. In 1914 he became an adviser to the State Department, and in 1915 he became Secretary of State. In November 1917 he concluded the Ishii-Lansing Agreement with Japanese ambassador Ishii Kikujiro on the issues of Japanese immigration to America and China. In 1920 he resigned after clashing with W. Wilson over his stance on the Paris Peace Conference and the Covenant of the League of Nations. His books include The Peace Negotiations (1921) and The Big Four and Others at the Peace Conference (21).

The capital of the state of Michigan in the United States. It faces the Grand River, 136 km west-northwest of Detroit. When the state government was moved from Detroit in 1847, it was a wasteland. It was incorporated as a city in 1859. At the end of the 19th century, it developed as a manufacturing center for small steam engines for agricultural machinery. The Old Motor Work Company and the Leo Motor Car Company were founded, and it became the center of the automobile industry, with related industries such as diesel engines, hoists, and pumps established there. Michigan State University (founded in 1855) is located in nearby East Lansing. Population: 114,297 (2010).

アメリカ合衆国,ミシガン州の州都。デトロイトの西北西 136km,グランド川に面する。 1847年州政府がデトロイトから移されたときは,荒地であった。 59年市制。 19世紀末には農機具用の小型スチームエンジンの製造の中心地として発達。オールドモーターワーク会社,レオモーターカー会社が設立され,自動車工業の中心となり,ディーゼルエンジン,起重機,ポンプなどの関連工業が立地する。付近のイーストランシングにミシガン州立大学 (1855創立) がある。人口 11万4297(2010)。
