Death painting - Shinie

Japanese: 死絵 - しにえ
Death painting - Shinie
A type of ukiyo-e woodblock print. When a popular actor, novelist, painter, or other person died, they would be depicted on their way to the afterlife or reciting their death poem, satisfying the feelings of longing from their fans. This style began in the Edo period around the Kansei era and continued until the Meiji era. In the margins of the painting, a brief biography, date of death, posthumous name, gravesite, and other information are written, as well as a death poem or memorial poem (mostly kyoka or kyoku). Most of them are of kabuki actors, and there are said to be over 100 types of shini-e of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, who committed suicide.
