Hongo [village] - Hongo

Japanese: 本郷[村] - ほんごう

A village in Kuga County in eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. Population 1,514 (1995). Mount Rakan is located in the north, and the Hongo River, a tributary of the Nishiki River, flows south through the center. The central settlement of Hongo is at the confluence of the Hongo River and the Motoya River, and has long developed as the center of Yamashiro-go. The Sekishu Kaido road runs through the village, and in early modern times the Yamashiro magistrate's office of the Hagi Domain was located here. Located in the mountainous area of the Chugoku Mountains, forests occupy most of the village area, and in addition to rice, pears and chestnuts are cultivated. The village-run Rakan Kogen Ranch is located on the middle slope of Mount Rakan, and Yamashiro beef (beef cattle) is thriving here.

山口県東部，玖珂（くが）郡の村。人口1514(1995)。北部に羅漢山があり，中央を錦川の支流本郷川が南流する。中心集落の本郷は本郷川と本谷川の合流点にあり，山代郷の中心地として古くから発達した。石州街道が通じ，近世には萩藩の山代代官所が置かれていた。中国山地の山間部にあって山林が村域の大部分を占め，米作のほか梨，クリの栽培が行われる。羅漢山の中腹には村営羅漢高原牧場があり，山代牛(肉牛)の飼育が盛んである。
