[Vertebrate gills]
In many vertebrates, during development, several pairs of bulges appear on the side walls of the pharynx, and corresponding depressions also appear in the ectoderm. Eventually, the two connect to form gill slits that open onto the body surface. In higher vertebrates, the gill slits do not open, and the lungs form separately.
