Ganser is also known as a daze. It is a hysterical mental symptom that is often seen as a psychosomatic reaction during detention. When questioned, the patient appears to have grasped the content quite accurately, but responds in an absurd manner, showing symptoms that may be mistaken for dementia. In many cases, it is accompanied by impaired consciousness, hallucinatory confusion, and a dream-like state, but it rarely continues for long periods of time. It is characterized by a blank expression and a weak attitude. It was named after the German psychiatrist S. Ganser (1853-1931), who reported it as a syndrome seen in detained pretrial detainees.
