Population density

The number of people per unit area. Generally, this refers to the ordinary population density (statistical population density) calculated using administrative districts as units. The more advanced the production method and technology, and the greater the population carrying capacity of an area, the higher the population density. Population density is generally based on the assumption that the population is distributed evenly within the target area, but when there are differences in population distribution due to differences in topography and land use, the expression population density averages out the differences in population distribution. To eliminate this drawback, there are methods of comparison using population density by topographical surface based on habitable land area, cultivated land area, geographically defined homogeneous areas, population density for cultivated land, and agricultural population density, and these are called specific population densities.

単位面積あたりの人口数。一般には行政区画を単位として計算した普通人口密度 (統計的人口密度) をいう。生産様式や技術が高度で人口収容力が大きい地域ほど人口密度は高くなる。人口密度は一般に，対象地域内の人口分布が均等であるという仮定に立つが，実際に地形や土地利用などの違いによって人口分布に差があるとき，人口密度という表現では人口分布の差が平均化されてしまう。こうした欠点をなくすため，可住地面積，耕地面積，地理学的に設定された等質地域などをもとにした地形面別人口密度，対耕地人口密度，農業人口密度などで比較する方法もあり，これらは特殊人口密度と呼ばれる。
