A large fern of the family Lycoraceae whose leaves hang down from cliff walls and slopes; it is called a brook fern because many buds grow on the leaf surface. The rhizome is thick and short, creeping, and the leaves grow in clusters. When fully developed, the leaves can reach up to 2m in length, are triangular-oblong, and leathery. The petiole is long, lanceolate at the base, and densely covered with large, shiny brown scales. The leaf blade is deeply pinnately lobed twice, the pinnae are deeply pinnately lobed, the lobes are linear and have sharp tips, and the veins are reticulate. The sporangium clusters are thin and oblong, the mesh in which the sporangium clusters are attached is deeply depressed, and a thick insula covers the inward portion, forming a lid for the depression.

葉が断崖壁や斜面から垂れ下がる大型のシシガシラ科のシダで，葉の表面にたくさんの芽を生ずるためにコモチシダと呼ばれる。根茎は太く，短く匍匐（ほふく）し，葉を叢生（そうせい）する。葉はよく発達すると2mにも達し，三角状長楕円形で，革質である。葉柄は長く，基部に披針形，光沢のある褐色の大型鱗片を密につける。葉身は2回羽状に深裂，羽片は羽状に深裂し，裂片は線形で先は鋭い。葉脈は網状脈である。胞子囊（ほうしのう）群は細い長楕円形で，胞子囊群がつく網目は深くくぼみ，厚い包膜が内向きにおおい，くぼみのふたになる。
