A Go player in the early Edo period, the 4th Honinbo and Meijin. He was the first Go master in the history of Go to be called a Go saint and was praised for his skill level of 13th dan. He was born in Umajimura, Iwami Province (Shimane Prefecture). His childhood name was Yamazaki Sanjiro. He learned Go at the age of 7 and studied under Honinbo Doetsu in Edo. His talent matured slowly, and in 1677 (Enpo 5), he succeeded Doetsu as the 4th Honinbo, and the following year he became a Meijin Go master. He beat all the strong players of the time to below his level and reigned as the leading Go master. He invented a more rational opening move rather than a force-based Go style, introduced the idea of hand division, and created the foundations of modern Go. 江戸前期の囲碁棋士,4世本因坊,名人。囲碁史上初めて碁聖といわれ実力13段とうたわれた。石見国(島根県)馬路村の生まれ。幼名は山崎三次郎。7歳で碁を覚え,江戸で本因坊道悦に学んだ。その才はゆっくりと熟成,延宝5(1677)年道悦の跡を継ぎ4世本因坊,翌年名人碁所となった。当時の強豪をすべて向こう先以下に打ち込み,第一人者として君臨した。それまでの力碁中心から合理的な布石を創案,手割りの考え方も導入,近代的な碁の基礎をつくった。このころ本因坊家,井上家,安井家,林家と4つの棋院家元が固まり段位制度も確立した。<参考文献>呉清源『道策』(日本囲碁大系)
