Sphoṭa (English spelling)

Japanese: スポータ(英語表記)sphoṭa
Sphoṭa (English spelling)
An important concept in Indian linguistic theory. Words are accompanied by sounds, but at the same time convey meaning. Sounds are impermanent, but the relationship between words and meanings is fixed. Patanjali (2nd century BC) of the Grammar School hypothesized something called sphota (bud) as the substance of words that conveys meaning, and that it is revealed by sounds. Based on this theory, Bhartrihari (late 5th century) argued that sphota is eternal and unchanging. He said that this sphota, the substance of words, is none other than Brahman, the fundamental cause of the world, the true existence.
