1872‐1958 British composer. Following in the footsteps of Elgar, he was one of the leading composers of the 20th century British music revival along with Holst and others. After studying at Cambridge University and the Royal Conservatoire College, he studied under M. Ravel in Paris in 1908. The rediscovery of English folk songs and a return to 16th century English music became the basis of his style. He composed nine symphonies, including the Sea Symphony (No. 1 with chorus, 1909), London Symphony (No. 2, 1914), Pastoral Symphony (No. 3, 1915), and the Symphonies of the 20th century.
