A compressor is a machine that rotates an impeller inside a casing and uses the centrifugal force of the gas to compress and pump the gas, with a discharge pressure of 0.1 MPa (1 kg/ ^cm2 ) or more. There are turbo and radial types, and most are multi-stage turbo compressors with backward-curved blades. Some open-type radial compressors with radial blades have a pressure ratio (discharge pressure/suction pressure) of 5 to 7 in a single stage, and the turbochargers used in automobiles are of this type.

ケーシングの中で羽根車を回転させて，気体の遠心力を利用して気体を圧送する機械で，吐出し圧力が 0.1MPa (1 kg/cm² ) 以上のものをいう。ターボ形とラジアル形があり，後向き羽根をもつ多段ターボ圧縮機が大部分を占める。径向き羽根をもつオープン形ラジアル圧縮機では単段で圧力比 (吐出し圧力/吸込み圧力) が5～7に達するものもあり，自動車に用いられているターボチャージャはこの形式である。
