Honinbo Jowa

A Go player from the late Edo period, the 12th Honinbo. There are various theories about his birthplace, with the most popular in recent years being Izu Province (Numazu). His original surname was Toya, later Kazuno, and his childhood name was Matsunosuke. He was a disciple of the 11th Honinbo Genjo. A late bloomer, he achieved the rank of 6th dan and the heir to Honinbo in 1819 (Bunsei 2). In the same year, he succeeded Genjo as the 12th Honinbo. In 1831 (Tenpo 2), he became the Meijin Gosho. There was a rivalry for the Gosho with Yasui Senchi (Chitoku), Inoue Inseki (Genan), and Hayashi Motomi, and Jokazu used jutsu tactics. 江戸末期の囲碁棋士,12世本因坊。生地には諸説があり,近年は伊豆国(沼津)説が有力。本姓戸谷,のちに葛野,幼名松之助。11世本因坊元丈門下。大器晩成の棋士で文政2(1819)年に六段,本因坊跡目となった。同10年,元丈の跡を継いで12世本因坊。天保2(1831)年名人碁所に就く。碁所をめぐっては安井仙知(知得),井上因碩(幻庵),林元美らとの間に角逐があり,丈和は術策を用いた。そのため,9年碁所返上を余儀なくされ,翌年丈策に家督を譲って退隠。<著作>『国技観光』『収秤精思』<参考文献>荒木直躬『本因坊丈和全集』(歴代名人打碁大系),高木祥一『剛腕丈和』(囲碁古典名局選集)
