Miyaraku - Mimiraku

Japanese: 美弥良久 - みみらく

It is the name of an island at the western edge of Japan where it is believed that the dead appear, and poems to that effect can be found in works such as "The Diary of Lady Mura" and "The Collection of Kii-Kyo Poets." However, going back further, in volume 16 of the "Man'yoshu," there is "Mineraku Cape, Matsuura Prefecture, Hizen Province," "Miyaraku Cape" in the Matsuura County section of the "Hizen Province Fudoki," and "Mimiraku Cape" in the July 837 entry of the "Shoku Nihon Koki," all of which refer to the area of Miiraku on Fukue Island, at the southern tip of the Goto Islands.

日本の西の果てにあり，死者が姿を現すと信じられた島の名で，《蜻蛉日記》《散木奇歌集》などにその趣旨で詠んだ歌がみえる。しかしさかのぼって《万葉集》巻十六には〈肥前国松浦県（まつらのあがた）美禰良久（みねらく）の崎〉，《肥前国風土記》松浦郡の条に〈美弥良久の埼〉，《続日本後紀》承和4年(837)7月条に〈旻楽（みみらく）埼〉がみえ，これらは五島列島南端，福江島の三井楽（みいらく）の地にあてられている。
