French composer. Born in Paris. His father was a painter and his mother a pianist. In 1930, two years after he began his formal training in composition, he met Barès and others, who had a decisive influence on him. In 1936, in reaction to the neoclassical trend, he formed the composer group Jeune France with Messiaen and others. He started out with a primitivism style, such as Five Spells for solo flute (1936) and the orchestral piece Five Festivities (1939), but during World War II he showed a simple, lyrical style. After the war, he integrated both sides, and wrote many concertos, including the Concerto for Ondes Martenot (1947) and Cello Concerto No. 2 (1966), which was dedicated to Rostropovich. He was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire from 1966 to 1970. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
