With the spread of Christianity around 1000, Polish folk music developed in much the same way as Western European music until the 16th century. After the 16th century, Polish folk dances permeated art music, and the mazurka, polonaise, and Krakowiak were composed, influencing Western European music. Around the 17th century, foreign musicians, especially Italians, were active, and although Polish music was under strong Western European influence from the mid-18th century onwards, Chopin, S. Moniuszko, K. Szymanowski and others worked to create a new national music in line with the growing national consciousness. After World War II, Polish music showed a radical and avant-garde tendency led by K. Penderecki, and has played a leading role in modern music.
