A reformed sect that emerged in Poland as a result of the Protestant Reformation. Known as a radical sect, they were called the Arians. Originally a descendant of Calvinism, they split off from Calvinism at the Synod of 1562-65. In terms of doctrine, they advocated anti-Trinitarianism (hence the derogatory name Arians) and anabaptism. Socially, they opposed private ownership of property, social class distinctions, state power, and war. Because of their radical views, they were viewed with hostility not only by the Catholic Church but also by other reformed sects, and were excluded from the Concordat of Sandomierz (1570), which attempted to unify the reformed sect.
