"Pratique du théâtre" (English: Pratique du théâtre)

...The Fronde, the biggest challenge to the establishment of absolute monarchy, saw the introduction of Italian opera by Cardinal J. Mazarin, the Italian chancellor who succeeded Richelieu, and the rise of the Baroque. François Hédelin, Abbé d'Aubignac (1604-76) published Pratique du théâtre in 1657, which became a standard document for classicism, but Corneille wrote three treatises (On Dramatic Poetry, On Tragedy, and On the Three Unitaries) in response to it, trying to make use of the discussion of rules from the standpoint of a performer. Comedy was freer than tragedy, partly because it was missing from Aristotle's Poetics, but as the discussion of rules rapidly improved the quality of dramatic literature, it became a superior literary genre that could rival tragedy, especially through Molière.
