British photographer. Born in Scotland. In 1841 he became interested in calotype and studied the technique. In 1843 he opened a photography studio in Edinburgh. In the same year he began taking portraits using calotype in collaboration with Hill. Adamson was in charge of lighting and photography, while Hill was in charge of printing, and the firm became known as Adamson & Hill.
