British photographer. Born in Scotland. In 1841 he became interested in calotype and studied the technique. In 1843 he opened a photography studio in Edinburgh. In the same year he began taking portraits using calotype in collaboration with Hill. Adamson was in charge of lighting and photography, while Hill was in charge of printing, and the firm became known as Adamson & Hill. In addition to around 1,500 portraits, they also left behind landscape and genre photographs.

英国の写真家。スコットランド生れ。1841年カロタイプに興味を持ち，その技術を学ぶ。1843年エディンバラに写真スタジオを開業。同年よりヒルと共同でカロタイプによる肖像写真撮影を開始する。アダムソンがライティングと撮影，ヒルがプリント作業を担当し，〈アダムソン＆ヒル〉として知られた。約1500点の肖像写真のほか，風景，風俗写真などを残した。
