1808‐98 (Bunka 5‐Meiji 31) A nobleman in the late Edo period. In 1847 (Koka 4), he became the Minister of the Right. At the request of Shimazu Nariakira, he adopted Nariakira's adopted daughter, Sumiko, and married her to Shogun Tokugawa Iesada from the Konoe family in December 1856 (Ansei 3). This was a move to set up Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu, who was recommended by Nariakira and Matsudaira Yoshinaga, as the Shogun's successor (the Shogun's succession issue). In 1857, he became the Minister of the Left, and together with Takatsukasa Masamichi, Takatsukasa Sukehiro, and Sanjo Sanetomo, he campaigned to support Yoshinobu, and was in opposition to the regent Kujo Naotada, who had allied with Ii Naosuke. Even after Tokugawa Yoshitoku was selected as the successor in June 1858, he continued to criticize the Shogunate for signing the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan without imperial permission, and participated in the imperial surrender to the Mito domain in August of the same year.
