Geta sandals

Japanese:
Geta sandals

A type of footwear. It is a type of sandal with leather stretched over the sole, and in some regions, it refers to the sandals that people usually wear. The distinctive feature of this type of footwear is that since the sole of the sandal is leather, it does not let moisture in even when walking in damp places, and the sole does not get damaged, so it was popular. The leather used for the lining is the hide of animals such as cows, horses, wild boars, and deer. It is said that the tea master Sen no Rikyu invented setta, but this is not certain. In the early Edo period, setta were a specialty of Settsu and Yamashiro provinces. In Edo, setta made in Edo were called jisetta, while setta made in Kamigata were called dagarisetta.

As the years went by, setta began to have irons attached to the bottom of the sandals to prevent the leather from wearing down, making a jingling sound when walking, which Edo people found amusing, and studded setta became popular. In addition, kesu setta, Yoshiwara setta for playing in Yoshiwara, and tanzen setta for more stylish wear also appeared. Feudal lords' wives and palace maids wore vehicle setta with donsu fabric on the outside, while monks and doctors wore kapitan setta. Kapitan setta have a three-ply leather exterior and are painted black or tame, but they have the disadvantage that the paint peels off as they get older.
