Splendid Isolation

Splendid Isolation

This refers to the non-aligned foreign policy of Britain, which took a stand aloof from the conflict between the Triple Alliance and the Russo-French Alliance in continental Europe at the end of the 19th century. The term was first used in a debate at the Canadian Dominion Parliament in 1896, and has since been favored by Conservative politicians in Britain. It was a traditional policy supported by Britain's superior economic and naval power, as well as the strong ties of its empire that extended around the world, and was argued to be a choice made to ensure "freedom of action to respond to any situation." However, with the onset of the 20th century and the intensification of conflicts between the great powers, there were cries of the danger of isolation, and this policy was eventually abandoned with the conclusion of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902 and the Anglo-French Entente in 1904.
