…By disowning one's parents, a child was released from the parent's home, and as a legal effect, the parent was freed from any liability for the child's crime, and the child lost the right to inherit property. Disowning one's parents required the preparation and public announcement of a letter of disownment. Since the main cause of disownment was the child's disrespect for his or her parents, disowning one's parents was also called "disrespect" or "disownment."
