Bingo Kasuri

Japanese:
Bingo Kasuri

Cotton kasuri is produced in the area of Fukuyama City and Fuchu City in Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1853 (Kaei 6), Tomita Kyusaburo invented a method of manufacturing kasuri threads that use bamboo bark wrapping to prevent dyeing, and Igeta kasuri was created. Later, imported spun yarn was used and commercialized under the names Karaito kasuri, Ariji kasuri, Taniseko kasuri, and Bunkyu kasuri. In the early Meiji period, it was shipped to Osaka under the new name Bingo kasuri, and by the end of the Meiji period, annual production had reached 440,000 bolts. In 1891 (Meiji 24), machine binding was invented, and by introducing the techniques of Kurume kasuri, picture kasuri was also produced. The dyeing process used to be natural indigo, but from the 1920s they started using chemical dyes, and from 1935 they started using power looms, and as a result of mechanization and rationalization, the area has become Japan's largest kasuri production area. The kasuri patterns are woven in a vertical and horizontal pattern on a navy blue background, and range from simple geometric patterns to picture kasuri, but there are also colored kasuri patterns. Originally, the kasuri was made from cotton and was used as everyday wear and work clothes for farmers, but as demand decreased, many businesses have switched to wool and silk fabrics.
