A stratovolcano located about 70 km southeast of Mexico City in Central America. It is 5,465 m above sea level. It has a crater with a diameter of about 600 m at the summit, which is covered with perpetual snow. It was active from the 16th to 18th centuries, but after the 1927 eruption it was inactive, but has since erupted again. In 2000, about 50,000 surrounding residents were evacuated. It also erupted in 2012. It was first reached by a subordinate of H. Cortes in 1519. The foot of the mountain was a base for Christian missionary work immediately after Spanish colonial rule, and the 14 monasteries built in various places in the early 16th century, including the monastery of Cuernavaca with its cathedral and the monastery of Tepoztlan, which is now a museum, were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994.
