An oasis city in the western tip of Rajasthan state in northwest India. Population 16,578 (1971). Located in the Thar Desert, it prospered through caravan trade with the lower Indus River basin. From 1818 to 1949, it was the capital of the princely state of the same name. The town was founded in 1156 by Rajput king Rao Jaisal, and its name means "Rock of Jaisal." A castle stands on a rocky hill about 80 meters above sea level, and there is a palace and a Jain temple there. The town is also surrounded by a city wall. インド北西部,ラージャスターン州西端部のオアシス都市。人口1万6578(1971)。タール砂漠中に位置し,インダス川下流域との隊商交易で栄えた。1818‐1949年には同名の藩王国の主都であった。町は1156年にラージプート族のラーオー・ジャイサル王によって建設され,〈ジャイサルの岩〉を意味する。比高約80mの岩丘の上に城がそびえ,そこに宮殿やジャイナ教寺院がある。町も市壁に囲まれている。インド最良のラクダの産地で,岩塩,羊毛,皮革などを集散。
