A prehistoric culture of American Indians that developed in the desert region of southwestern North America (southern Arizona). It is divided into the Pioneer Period (100 BC-500 AD), Colonization Period (500-900), Settlement Period (900-1100), and Classic Period (1100-1400), and is considered to be the ancestor culture of the present-day Pima and Papago peoples.
