…What is generally called cherry blossoms are mainly deciduous trees of the genus Prunus and subgenus Prunus in the Rosaceae family, found mainly in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Many of them bloom simultaneously, making them beautiful and widely admired. In Japan, there are about 100 wild species, including about 10 natural species such as Yamazakura, Ooyamazakura, Kasumizakura, Oshimazakura, Mamezakura, Edohigan, Chojizakura, Miyamazakura, and Takanezakura, as well as varieties and cultivars. Many cherry species are sun-loving and grow quickly, forming secondary forests, making them suitable for planting at home. Many horticultural varieties have been cultivated from these wild species, and the number is said to be between 200 and 300.

…一般にサクラと総称しているものは，主として北半球の温帯と暖帯に分布しているバラ科サクラ属サクラ亜属の主として落葉性の樹木で，花がいっせいに開花して美しいものが多く，広く観賞されている。日本にはヤマザクラ，オオヤマザクラをはじめ，カスミザクラ，オオシマザクラ，マメザクラ，エドヒガン，チョウジザクラ，ミヤマザクラ，タカネザクラなど10種類ほどの自然種を基本として，変種や品種をあわせると約100ほどの種類が野生している。サクラ類の多くは陽樹で，しかも二次林を構成する生長の速い種が多いため，人家で栽植するにも好適であり，これらの野生種から多数の園芸品種が育成され，その数も200から300といわれる。…
