There is one common property in the magnitude relationship between real numbers and the inclusion relationship between sets. In other words, if we express the relationship ≽ or ≧ abstractly as ⊵, then it satisfies the following three conditions: a ⊵ a ... reflexive law a ⊵ b , b ⊵ a ⇒ a = a ... antisymmetric law a ⊵ b , b ⊵ c ⇒ a ⊵ c ... transitive law. This is called an order relationship, or simply order. A set that has an order relationship is called an ordered set. The big difference between the case of real numbers and the inclusion relationship between sets is that in the case of real numbers, there is always a magnitude relationship between two real numbers.

実数の大小関係，集合の包含関係などには一つの共通した性質がある。すなわち≽，または≧という関係を抽象的に⊵で表すことにすると，　a⊵a　……反射法則　　a⊵b,b⊵a　⇒　a＝a　……反対称法則　　a⊵b,b⊵c　⇒　a⊵c　……推移法則　という3条件を満たす。このようなものを順序関係，または単に順序という。順序関係の与えられた集合を順序集合という。実数の場合と集合の包含関係の大きな違いは，実数の場合は，二つの実数の間に必ず大小関係があることである。
