A former town in Taka District, central Hyogo Prefecture. Occupying the upper reaches of the Sugihara River, a tributary of the Kako River, the town is mostly mountainous and produces cedar and cypress. Livestock is also raised. It is also famous as a producer of Sugihara paper, made from paper mulberry. It is part of the Banshu textile belt, and textiles are thriving. In November 2005, it merged with Naka Town and Yachiyo Town in Taka District to become Taka Town, Taka District. Area 84.06 km2 . 兵庫県中部,多可郡の旧町。加古川の支流杉原川上流部を占め,大部分は山地で,スギ,ヒノキを産する。畜産も行う。コウゾを原料とする杉原紙産地としても有名。播州織物地帯に属し,織物業が盛ん。2005年11月,多可郡中町,八千代町と合併し町制,多可郡多可町となる。84.06km2。7463人(2003)。
