In Thai, they are called Soai. They are a Mon-Khmer speaking ethnic group that live in the hills from northeastern Thailand to Cambodia. Their population is estimated at over 600,000. In the past, their main occupation was slash-and-burn agriculture with hoes, but now most of them cultivate rice, and some are involved in elephant hunting and ironsmithing. Buddhism has been deeply ingrained in them, along with their traditional animist beliefs.
