Western Roman Emperor (reigned 393-423). Son of Theodosius I. With the death of his father in 395, the empire was divided and he became the sole Western emperor, but his father-in-law, F. Stilico, held real power until 408. During his reign, the Visigothic Alaric I occupied Rome (410), the Vandals and Suebi swept through Gaul, and Constantius III pretended to be emperor in Britain. The empire fell into chaos due to his incompetence and ineffectiveness, and he himself barely escaped to Ravenna. He eventually died without children, and was succeeded by Valentinian III, the son of his brother-in-law, Constantius.

西ローマ皇帝 (在位 393～423) 。テオドシウス1世の子。 395年父の死とともに帝国は分裂し西方の単独帝となったが，408年までは義父 F.スチリコが実権を握った。その治世中，西ゴートのアラリック1世がローマを占領 (410) ，バンダル族，スエビ人がガリアを席捲，コンスタンチウス3世がブリタニアで帝位を僭称するなど，彼の無能，無力による失政と相まって帝国は大混乱に陥り，彼自身はかろうじてラベンナに難を避けるありさまだった。結局子のないまま死に，義弟コンスタンチウスの子ウァレンチニアヌス3世が跡を継いだ。
