[Born] 384.9.9. [Died] August 15, 423. Western Roman Emperor (reigned 393-423). Son of Theodosius I. With the death of his father in 395, the empire was divided and he became the sole Western emperor, but his father-in-law, F. Stilico, held real power until 408. During his reign, the Visigothic Alaric I occupied Rome (410), the Vandals and Suebi swept through Gaul, and Constantius III pretended to be emperor in Britain. The empire fell into chaos due to his incompetence and ineffectiveness, and he himself barely escaped to Ravenna. He eventually died without children, and was succeeded by Valentinian III, the son of his brother-in-law, Constantius.
