Pyralis farinalis (candy striped moth)

Japanese: カシノシマメイガ(菓子縞螟蛾) - カシノシマメイガ(英語表記)Pyralis farinalis
Pyralis farinalis (candy striped moth)
This insect belongs to the Lepidoptera family, Pyralidae, and its larvae feed on dry foods such as stored grains, biscuits and other sweets, starch, and dried fruit inside houses (illustration). The larvae build nests from food and their own feces, live there and feed, and when they mature, they build cocoons in gaps in the room and pupate inside. They emerge about twice a year, and overwinter as mature larvae. The emergence of adults is not constant, but they appear from early summer to autumn, and during the day they rest on walls with their wings open, bending their abdomen backwards in an extremely peculiar position.
