A bivalve of the family Arcidae. The shell is well inflated, measuring 9cm high, 12cm long, and 7.5cm in diameter. There are around 42 ribs on the surface of the shell, the inside is white, and there are many teeth at the bite. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 3-30m in inland bays from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula, and feeds on suspended organic matter in the sea. It is collected with a sieve net. It is also cultivated. The spawning season is in the summer. As its name suggests, the flesh of the akagai is red, which is due to the hemoglobin in its blood. It has a good taste and is used as an ingredient in sashimi and sushi. It is often the saruboogai, not the akagai, that is used in akagai-meshi (red clam rice).
