The part that covers the whole head. Made of leather or iron. In the old days , it was a star bowl with a large riveted head made of glued pieces, but in the Middle Ages , it became a muscle bowl with a flat riveted head, and in the early modern period, various strange bowls were created, such as peach-shaped and eboshi-shaped embossed bowls of the user's choice, and kamikake bowls with paper added. *Hogen (around 1220): "I drew my sword and swung the bowl of Saito's helmet." ⑨ A wooden container for storing cooked rice. 〘名〙 (pātra 鉢多羅の略。応器・応量器と訳す。体・色・量三つとも法にかなっているの意)① 仏道修行者の食器。また、僧尼が托鉢(たくはつ)の時に所持する器。鉄・石・陶製などがある。はちう。はつう。はちのこ。※書紀(720)持統三年正月(寛文版訓)「仏像一躯(はしら)、灌頂の幡鍾(かね)・鉢(ハチ)各一口、〈略〉賜ふ」② 僧が経文を誦し、各戸の前に立ち、米銭などの施与を受けてまわること。托鉢。また、それによって受けた施物。※浄瑠璃・加増曾我(1706頃)一「身が門へもはちに出よ、手の内もよそよりは、大づかみにさせんず」③ 皿(さら)よりは深く、碗(わん)よりは浅く、上部の広く開いた食器。主に、陶製のものをいう。※延喜式(927)七「鉢一口、燈坏六口」④ 暖をとるための火を入れる容器。火鉢。※宇津保(970‐999頃)蔵開中「はち、しろがねを内黒にいろどれり」⑤ 草木を植えこむための容器。植木鉢。※徒然草(1331頃)一五四「鉢に植ゑられける木ども、皆掘りすてられにけり」⑥ 掘りおこした草木の根と土とがかたまりをなしたところ。⑦ 頭脳の組織を守る頂部の碗状の骨。頭蓋骨。また、頭部の横まわり。※史記抄(1477)一二「頭のはちを漆でぬりて酒杯にしたぞ」⑧ 兜(かぶと)の部分の名。頭全体を覆う部分。革または鉄でつくる。古くは矧(は)ぎ合わせの鋲頭を大きくつくった星鉢であるが、中世は鋲頭を平面にした筋鉢となり、近世は桃形(ももなり)、烏帽子形など好みの形状の打出鉢や紙のつくりのものを加えた紙懸鉢など異様な各種の鉢を生じた。※保元(1220頃か)中「太刀を抜て、斉藤が冑の鉢を丁どうつ」⑨ 炊(た)いて飯を入れておく木製の容器。おひつ。おはち。

はっち【鉢】

〘名〙 (「はち(鉢)」の変化した語) 托鉢坊主が門に立って、「はっちはっち」と言って施物を乞うこと。また、その托鉢坊主。※俳諧・西鶴五百韻(1679)早何「はっちにいるる善六か門〈西花〉 功徳池の水にうけ樋(とひ)かけられて〈西友〉」
