Water lily - Water lily

A floating annual plant in the Lemnaceae family (APG classification: Araceae). It is the smallest species of seed plants native to Japan, hence the name. The thallus is ellipsoidal, green, 0.3-0.8 mm long, 0.2-0.3 mm wide, and 0.2-0.6 mm high. It has one budding sac. It is monoecious. The inflorescence is borne on the surface of the thallus, has no bracts, and consists of one male and one female flower. It is distributed from the Kanto region to Honshu west of the island, to Okinawa, as well as Southeast Asia, Australia, and Africa.

ウキクサ科（APG分類：サトイモ科）の浮水性の一年草。日本産の種子植物のなかでは最小の種で、名はこのことに由来する。葉状体は楕円(だえん)体で緑色、長さ0.3～0.8ミリメートル、幅0.2～0.3ミリメートル、高さ0.2～0.6ミリメートル。出芽嚢(のう)は1個。雌雄同株。花序は葉状体の表面に生じ、包葉はなく、雄花、雌花各1個からなる。関東地方以西の本州から沖縄、および東南アジア、オーストラリア、アフリカに分布する。
