Ponape Island (English spelling)

Japanese: ポナペ[島]（英語表記）Ponape Island

A volcanic island in the eastern part of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific Ocean. It belongs to the Federated States of Micronesia. It is called Pohnpei Island locally. Its population is 33,000 (1994). Its area is 334.19 km2, the largest in the Caroline Islands and the second largest in Micronesia after Guam. The island is trapezoidal, with mountain ridges approaching the coastline, and the entire island is covered in tropical rainforest. This rainforest is continuous with the mangrove forests that flourish in the inland sea, without any gaps in the greenery. This lush greenery is largely due to the fact that the island has one of the world's highest rainfall levels, with an average annual rainfall of 4,870 mm.
