A district in the southern part of Gifu City. Former Kano Town. Located south of JR Gifu Station, Kano Station on the Nagoya Railroad Main Line is located here. During the Edo Period, it was the castle town of the Kano Domain and a post town on the Nakasendo Road. After the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Tokugawa Ieyasu turned his attention to this area, and in order to prepare for the West, he abolished Gifu Castle and expanded and renovated the old Kano Castle, making it the residence of the Okudaira clan with 100,000 koku of rice and a military base for the Edo Shogunate. This role was later lost, and as the stipend was reduced to 32,000 koku, the domain's power declined and the domain's samurai fell into poverty and had to rely on side jobs manufacturing Japanese umbrellas. This manufacturing of Japanese umbrellas is still carried on today as a traditional industry. The ruins of Kano Castle are a national historic site and have been developed into Kano Park.
