Opera Buffa - Opera Buffa (English) Italian

A comic opera born in the 18th century. It developed from and became independent of the musical comedy "Intermezzo" that was performed between the acts of traditional operas, and with the advent of opera buffa, traditional opera came to be called opera seria. Its main characteristics include the emphasis on recitatives that connect scenes and finales performed by ensembles, and the addition of bass roles. From the mid-18th century onwards, thanks to the efforts of Paisiello and Cimarosa, it became more popular than opera seria, reaching its peak with Rossini's works in the early 19th century. However, from the time of Donizetti, lyrical elements became stronger, and by the mid-19th century, buffa elements were absorbed into opera seria, and opera buffa almost disappeared.

18世紀に生まれた喜劇的オペラ。従来のオペラの幕間(まくあい)に上演された音楽喜劇「インテルメッツォ」から発展し、独立したもので、オペラ・ブッファの登場により、従来のオペラはオペラ・セリアとよばれるようになった。場面をつなぐレチタティーボやアンサンブルによるフィナーレが重要視され、バスの役が加わったことなどに大きな特徴がある。18世紀中葉以降、パイジェッロ、チマローザらの活躍によってオペラ・セリアをしのぐほどの人気を得、19世紀初頭のロッシーニの諸作で最盛期を迎えた。しかし、ドニゼッティのころから叙情的な要素が強くなり、19世紀中葉にはブッファ的要素はオペラ・セリアのなかに吸収されて、オペラ・ブッファはほとんど姿を消した。
