A former town in Katori County, northeastern Chiba Prefecture. It straddles the lowlands of the Tone River, which runs through the northeastern part of the prefecture, and the Shimousa Plateau. The central city, which is served by the Narita Line, was an important port for water transportation along the Tone River in the early modern period. It is a producer of early-season rice, as well as sweet potatoes, vegetables, and peanuts. In recent years, it has become a commuter town for the Kashima coastal industrial area, and has been undergoing urbanization and residential development. In March 2006, it merged with Sawara City, Yamada Town in Katori County, and Kurimoto Town to become a city, Katori City. 61.84 km2 . Population 25,956 (2003). 千葉県北東部,香取郡の旧町。北東部を貫流する利根川の低地と下総(しもうさ)台地にまたがる。成田線が通じる中心市街は近世利根川水運の要港であった。早場米の産地であり,サツマイモ,野菜,ラッカセイなども産する。近年,鹿島臨海工業地帯のベッドタウンとして,都市化・宅地化が進んでいる。2006年3月,佐原市,香取郡山田町,栗源町と合併し市制,香取市となる。61.84km2。2万5956人(2003)。
