Tāhir Dynasty - Tāhir

Tāhir Dynasty - Tāhir

The first Persian Islamic dynasty (821-873). The grandfather of the founder, Tahir, participated in the Abbasid Revolution. Tahir also served the Abbasid Caliph Mamun and made great achievements, becoming governor of Baghdad and Jazira, and then governor of Khorasan. In 821, the name of the Caliph was no longer recited during Friday prayers, and Tahir was virtually independent. The Caliph also recognized the power of the Tahirs and was forced to appoint the second Tahir, Talha, as governor again. The Tahirids also provided Turkish slaves as tribute every year, and one member of the family subsequently served as police chief in Baghdad. They followed Sunni Islam and were in conflict with the Khawarij sect of Khorasan and the Shiite sect of Tabaristan. The official language of the court was Arabic, and they favored scholars and writers. They initially ruled over Sistan, but lost it to the emergence of the Saffarid dynasty, and eventually lost their capital, Neyshabur, leading to their downfall.
