Year of death: June 2, 1670 (July 18, 1670) Year of birth: 1599 A painter from the early Edo period. The founder of the Sumiyoshi school. His first name was Hiromichi, and later Hiromichi. He was commonly known as Uchiki. His real surname was Takagi. He became a disciple of Tosa Mitsuyoshi at a young age, and subsequently studied under Tosa Mitsunori, calling himself Tosa Kochin. In 1654, he participated in the production of Imperial Palace screen paintings under the guidance of Kano Tan'yū. In 1661, he shaved his head under Myoho-in Gyōnen Hoshinno, took the name Nyokei, and was conferred the title of Hokkyō. Two years later, he was ordered by decree of Emperor Sai to take the name of Sumiyoshi in order to revive the style of Sumiyoshi Keion (Keinin), a painter from the mid-Kamakura period. His representative works include "Kishū Tosho-gu Engi Emaki" (owned by Wakayama Tosho-gu), "Tale of Genji Art Album" (owned by Suntory Museum of Art), and "Tale of Ise Emaki."
