A painter from the early Edo period. The founder of the Sumiyoshi school. His first name was Hiromichi, and later Hiromichi. He was commonly known as Uchiki. His real surname was Takagi. He became a disciple of Tosa Mitsuyoshi at a young age, and subsequently studied under Tosa Mitsunori, calling himself Tosa Kochin. In 1654, he participated in the production of Imperial Palace screen paintings under the guidance of Kano Tan'yū. In 1661, he shaved his head under Myoho-in Gyōnen Hoshinno, took the name Nyokei, and was conferred the title of Hokkyō. Two years later, he was ordered by decree of Emperor Sai to take the name of Sumiyoshi in order to revive the style of Sumiyoshi Keion (Keinin), a painter from the mid-Kamakura period. His representative works include "Kishū Tosho-gu Engi Emaki" (owned by Wakayama Tosho-gu), "Tale of Genji Art Album" (owned by Suntory Museum of Art), and "Tale of Ise Emaki." 江戸前期の画家。住吉派の祖。名は初め広道,のち広通。通称は内記。本姓高木。若くして土佐光吉の門に入り,続いて土佐光則に師事,土佐光陳と称した。承応3(1654)年狩野探幽指導の内裏障壁画制作に参加。寛文1(1661)年妙法院尭然法親王のもとで剃髪,如慶と号し,法橋に叙せられる。同2年後西天皇の勅によって鎌倉中期の画家住吉慶恩(慶忍)の画系を復興するため住吉氏を名乗った。代表作に「紀州東照宮縁起絵巻」(和歌山東照宮蔵),「源氏物語画帖」(サントリー美術館蔵),「伊勢物語絵巻」などがある。京都廬山寺および寛永寺護国院に葬られた。<参考文献>大村西崖編『東洋美術大観』5巻
