House of Bonaparte - Bonaparte (English spelling)

House of Bonaparte - Bonaparte (English spelling)

The family from which French Emperors Napoleon I and III were born. Their ancestors were from Lombardy, Italy. From the 13th century, the family spread throughout Italy, and in the early 16th century, they migrated to Ajaccio on the island of Corsica under the control of Genoa. After a period of uncertainty of about two and a half centuries, Carlo Buonaparte (French name Charles Bonaparte, 1746-85) emerged. He was a notary and participated in the Corsican independence movement. He and his wife Letizia Ramolino had five sons and three daughters, of which Napoleon (Italian name Napoleone) Bonaparte (later Napoleon I, 1769-1821) was the second son. His older brother Joseph (1768-1844), his younger brothers Lucien (1775-1840), Louis (1778-1846), and Jérôme (1784-1860) all made their names in history as related to Bonaparte, and although Bonaparte's son Napoleon II (1811-1832) did not ascend to the throne, Louis' third son Louis (1808-1873) ascended to the throne as Napoleon III, and after his death the family of Jérôme's fourth son Napoleon (1822-91) had the right to succeed to the throne.
