Mescaline

2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)ethylamine. _{C 11} H ₁₇ NO ₃ (211.26). A hallucinogenic alkaloid found in about 6% of mescal, a type of cactus that grows in the southern United States and Mexico , Anhalonium lewinii . It is a representative phenethylamine alkaloid. It is obtained by dehydrating and condensing 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde with nitromethane, and reducing the product with zinc-acetic acid or sodium amalgam. Melting point 35-36 °C, boiling point 180 °C (1.6 kPa). Easily soluble in water, alcohols, and chloroform, but practically insoluble in ether. It absorbs carbon dioxide in the air to become the carbonate. It can be easily purified as the sulfate (C ₁₁ H ₁₇ NO ₃ ) ₂ ･H ₂ SO ₄ ･2H ₂ O (melting point 183-186 °C). Ingestion of 0.3 to 0.5 g produces intense hallucinations, especially of colors, and produces a feeling of euphoria for 5 to 10 hours, so it is used in the field of psychiatry. _{LD 50} 212 mg/kg (intravenous injection in mice). 2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)ethylamine．C₁₁H₁₇NO₃(211.26)．アメリカ南部およびメキシコで産生するサボテンの一種メスカルAnhalonium lewiniiに約6％ 含有される幻覚性アルカロイド．フェネチルアミン系アルカロイドの代表的なものである．3,4,5-トリメトキシベンズアルデヒドとニトロメタンとを脱水縮合し，生成物を亜鉛-酢酸またはナトリウムアマルガム還元すると得られる．融点35～36 ℃，沸点180 ℃(1.6 kPa)．水，アルコール類，クロロホルムに易溶，エーテルにほとんど不溶．空気中で二酸化炭素を吸収して炭酸塩となる．硫酸塩(C₁₁H₁₇NO₃)₂･H₂SO₄･2H₂O(融点183～186 ℃)として容易に精製できる．0.3～0.5 g の摂取で，とくに色彩に関する強烈な幻覚が現れ，5～10時間程度多幸感を与えるので，精神医学分野で利用される．LD₅₀ 212 mg/kg(マウス，静注)．[CAS 54-04-6]
