Daikakuji lineage

Japanese:
Daikakuji lineage

One of the two imperial lines that split and opposed each other in the mid-Kamakura period. It refers to the imperial line descended from Emperor Kameyama. It began when the retired Emperor Gouda ruled the country from Daikakuji Temple in Saga, Kyoto. With the interference of the shogunate, after Emperor Gouda, the two lines alternated and the Jimyoin line succeeded to the throne, and Emperor Go-Daigo of this line also carried out the subjugation of the shogunate and the restoration of the Kenmu period. While Ashikaga Takauji supported the Jimyoin line and established the Northern Court, the Daikakuji line opposed them as the Southern Court, and after Emperor Go-Murakami, Chokei and Gokameyama followed, and in 1392 (Genchu 9, Meitoku 3), they merged with the Northern Court. However, the terms of the union were not met, and the two divided again. After that, the Southern Court continued to survive in the mountains of the Yamato region, where its surviving retainers repeatedly tried to revive their power through rebellions, but were unsuccessful. They were eventually destroyed by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa.
