Malachite is also called malachite. Its chemical composition is Cu 2 (OH) 2 CO 3 , and it is a monoclinic mineral that occurs in the upper oxidized zone or secondary rich zone of copper deposits. It is used for decoration, as a pigment, and as a raw material for fireworks. Large crystals are rare, and it forms delicate needle-like, but most are clumpy or crust-like, radial aggregates. It is brittle. Mohs hardness 3.5-4, specific gravity 3.9-4.05, twin plane (100). Cleavage is complete on {01} and clear on {010}. It is translucent to opaque, bright green, and the crystals have a glassy luster rather than a diamond luster, and the aggregates have a silky or velvety luster, and are often matte or earthy luster.
