Russian National Music - Russian National Music
A group of composers who aimed to create a national music in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. They were also known as the "Five." The group consisted of five members, including Balakirev, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Borodin, and none of them were professional musicians except for Balakirev. Although there were differences in the members' qualities and artistic views, they looked to predecessors such as Glinka as a model, and their aspiration to base their creations on traditional Russian culture saw the greatest results in works such as Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov. Their artistic views were inherited by later generations such as Shostakovich. →Dargomyzhsky→Related topics Glière | Taneyev | Tcherepnin | Tchaikovsky
