The capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is located in the northwestern part of the island of Trinidad. Its population was 52,451 (1992). It faces the Gulf of Paria and is said to be one of the most beautiful ports in the Antilles, but the city's maintenance has deteriorated in recent years. As the center of the largest oil-producing country in the West Indies, it is expected to develop greatly in the future. It is also known for its steel bands, which are played by beating drums, and calypso, and is home to a branch campus (Faculty of Agricultural Engineering) of the University of the West Indies, whose main campus is in Jamaica.
